Moisture gets pushed into cavities
Every thaw and refreeze moves warm, damp indoor air into walls and attics through gaps around wires, pot lights and top plates. It condenses on cold sheathing and freezes. Next chinook, it melts and soaks in.
Local Calgary service for spray foam, attics, shops, barns, new builds and larger commercial projects.
Exterior walls, renovationAires Spray Foam & Insulation is a family-owned contractor based in Edmonton and Calgary. Our Calgary crews handle spray foam, attic insulation, shops, barns, new builds and larger commercial projects.
Projects are scheduled by scope, access and site requirements. Most spray foam jobs are completed in one day, while larger commercial and agricultural work gets a written schedule with the quote.
The work itself is the same as in Edmonton: closed cell spray foam, blown-in fibreglass and cellulose, insulation removal, vent and vapour barrier repair, and fireproof coatings over exposed foam. See the full list on our insulation services page.

Edmonton gets long, steady cold. Calgary gets cold that keeps breaking. A chinook can take you from -30°C to above freezing inside a day, then the arch closes and it drops again.

Wet cellulose or fibreglass that freezes and thaws over and over packs down. An attic that was R-50 when it went in can lose real depth over a few winters.
Ice dams get blamed on the roof. Most of the time the cause is warm air leaking into the attic and melting snow on the deck. Stop the air and the dam usually goes away, which is why the fix happens in the attic and new shingles won't solve it.
Basement rim joists are where a lot of Calgary homes leak. In a cold snap you can see frost on the joist ends. Two or three inches of closed cell foam seals and insulates that band in one pass.

Read moreThe acreages around Calgary are full of buildings that suit foam. Horse barns, machine shops, Quonsets and heated garages are all good fits for closed cell foam. It bonds to steel and wood, cuts the condensation that drips off a cold roof, and gives mice nothing to eat or nest in.
Chinooks are hard on barns. Warm, humid air from animals hits a steel skin that just swung 30 degrees, and you get rain indoors. Foam on the inside of the skin keeps that surface warm enough that it doesn't sweat. More on that on our agricultural spray foam page.

Calgary keeps building, and new homes and basement developments are where spray foam is easiest to install. The studs are bare, nothing is in the way, and the foam can go into every cavity, around every box and up into the rim joist before drywall.

Yes. Fast swings between deep cold and above-freezing temperatures push moist air into wall and attic cavities, where it condenses and freezes. Air sealing and closed cell foam limit how much moisture gets in.
